  •  Sciatica, as the name implies, affects the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerve is the single longest nerve in the body.  It originates from the lower lumber region of your spine, through the pelvis, through the hind portion of your leg down to your foot.  It is mainly responsible for distributing blood to the back of our lower extremities.

The most common causes of sciatica are: a herniated disc, lumbar spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, trauma, piriformis syndrome, and spinal tumors. When one suffers from a herniated disc, there is an inflammation or bulging of the spinal disc causing it to protrude out of the annulus.  The annulus is the space between the spine where the spinal discs are located.  Disc herniation could exert pressure on the nearby nerve root causing a direct compression on sensitive nerve tissues such as the sciatic nerve. Lumbar spinal stenosis is almost the same as disc herniation in the sense that spinal nerves are pinched.  In this case, though, the spinal canal shrinks, squeezing and applying too much pressure on the spinal nerve inside. The spinal nerve branches out of the spinal canal to the entire body through openings called as neural foramina.  Once these passages are congested or narrowed, it causes nerve compression.  If the blockage happens on these passageways, they’re considered foraminal stenosis.  If it occurs on the opening where the sciatic nerve passes, it may cause sciatica.

Another cause can be spondylolisthesis, or more commonly known as slipped discs. It may also cause sciatica when a vertebral disc moves out of place and applies direct pressure to the spinal nerve adjacent to it, usually occuring on the lumbar or the lower portion of the spine. Blunt force trauma to the lower back region may cause severe damage to the spine and may cause sciatica as well.  Accidents or external forces that may cause bone fractures like vehicular accidents, horse riding accidents, sports injuries may all lead to sciatica as bone fragments may occasionally be the cause of the nerve compression. The piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle spasms and compresses the sciatic nerve. In this case, the sciatic nerve running beneath the piriformis muscle may sometimes get irritated by movement of the said muscle.

Lastly, spinal tumors are anomalous growths on the spine that can either be benign or malignant.  Rare as sciatica cases being caused by spinal tumors may be, once a tumor develops in the lumbar region, it may cause nerve compression that may trigger sciatica.

There are a lot of treatments recommended for sciatica, some non-invasive and some involving surgery.  In cases of bone fragments, spinal tumor, and severe cases of slipped or herniated disc causing the sciatica, of course surgery would be required as treatment.  But for some minor instances, chiropractic treatment and acupuncture is enough to relieve the pain. Chiropractic therapy may range from ice/cold therapy, ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), to spine adjustment or manipulation.  These entail for the lumber area to be exposed to cold or heat to reduce inflammation and muscle spasms.

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that originated from China.  Fine needles are inserted into your skin in strategic points in the body to release negative energy and restore health and well-being, and treat pain and illnesses.  It has been proven effective by medical practitioners.  It is highly recommended as a treatment for generic lumbar pain, even for mild sciatica, as it supposedly releases tension from the spastic muscles and relieves the pressure from the compressed nerve.

So if you have been experiencing sharp, burning pain on your lower extremities, it is best that you consult a medical practitioner at once.  You might be experiencing sciatica pain.  But like they say, prevention is better than cure.  Let’s not abuse our bodies.

    Sleep Apnea Treatment

There are 2 types of sleep apnea:

    1) Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – This most usual sort of apnea happens when throat muscles relax.

    2) Central Sleep Apnea – This form of apnea happens when the brain fails to transmit proper signals to the muscles that operate breathing.

Sleep apnea and snoring are directly associated because during snoring the air passage of the trachea is perpetually subjected to repetitive collapse and obstruction; as a matter of fact, it’s that collapse and obstruction that result in the vibration that, in the end, manifests itself as audible snoring. Obstructive Sleep Apnea thus happens when, because of that continual collapse of the air passage, breathing actually blocks.

    Stop Snoring Through Excercise

【2】Mouthwash practice without water and toothbrush. Does not contain water, bulge your cheek, and then back to original state, take this cycle at least 200 or more until the pharynx is very sour feeling. Then take water and no toothbrush to make a mouthwash.

【3】Practice rolling your tongue. Make your tongue under the palate, force your tongue backward and without leaving the palate, practice more than 50 times or so, until the soft palate is very sour feeling.

Mixing Pain Medicines Is Risky For The Stomach

Many people as they age take aspirin to help prevent heart attack and stroke. But a recent study found that mixing pain medicines may be risky. It showed that taking aspirin with common pain relievers may harm the stomach. These include Advil?(ibuprofen) and Aleve?(naproxen).

This study looked at health records of close to 50,000 people with pain. These people took over-the-counter (OTC) ibuprofen and naproxen. These drugs are called non-specific nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ns-NSAIDs). The study found that taking aspirin with (OTC) naproxen harms the stomach. The risk of stomach bleeding and ulcers doubled compared to naproxen alone. For ibuprofen, the risk tripled.

“Aspirin raises the risk for stomach problems,” said Dr. Joseph Biskupiak. He led the study and is from the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. OTC drugs should be taken as directed. “While you can buy them in your drug store, it doesn’t mean there’s no risk.”

The study also showed the harm from use of these ns-NSAIDs alone. The NSAIDs reviewed raised the risk of stomach problems by themselves. Harm to the stomach from ns-NSAIDs has been known for a while. In fact, each year ns-NSAIDs put more than 100,000 people in the hospital for stomach problems. And they’ve caused the deaths of thousands.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked makers of these drugs to add stronger warnings of serious stomach problems to their labels. The drug makers were also asked to update their labels to include serious skin reactions. They must also explain the potential risk to the heart. All OTC NSAID labels state not to take them for more than 10 days without talking to a doctor.

“Most people don’t know that OTCs are serious medicines. They have benefits, but they may have risks too,” said Biskupiak.

“I urge people to read the labels of OTC pain drugs. They must take these drugs the right way. Also, they should think twice before taking them with aspirin. People who need pain relief should talk with their doctors about which pain medicine might be right for them.”

About 31 million adults in the U.S. take OTC drugs for pain daily.

About 31 million adults in the U.S. take over-the-counter (OTC) drugs for pain daily.

    How to Avoid Panic Attacks

Anyone who has ever had a panic attack knows how life stopping these events can feel. A panic attack can seriously hurt your quality of life by causing you become terrified of a repeat episode. This terror is just another negative side effect of panic attacks, and you should learn to think of it as such so that you can get on with your life without the constant fear of a panic attack hanging over your head. Worrying about having a panic attack all the time might even cause you to trigger panic attacks later.

Panic attacks feel a lot like heart attacks. A panic attack might cause your heart to race, and it might cause you to become short of breath. You might find that you feel dizzy or light headed, and they are characterized with the feeling of life or death importance. It is not uncommon to believe that you are dying or about to die when you are having a panic attack. Fortunately for sufferers, they are usually not of a long duration, and will stop when they have run their course, usually a few minutes, or when the cause of the panic is removed.

You Can Control Symptoms of a Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can effect your quality of living and drag you down from doing the things you enjoy. If you have ever experienced a panic attack, then you know the feeling of terror that accompanies them, as well as the crippling fear that it might happen again.  If you are one of the three million Americans who have had multiple panic attacks, you should know that there are ways to control panic attack symptoms.

The symptoms are similar to a heart attack, and a sensation that you have lost touch with reality and an impending dread often accompanies the physical symptoms.  While you might end up in the emergency room the first time, this is not adequate treatment.  In order to control panic attack symptoms, you need to help prevent them in the first place.

    Options

One option is to consult a physician about getting treatment  Some medicines on the market can help panic attack sufferers from reoccurrences.  Another option available is cognitive-behavior therapy.  This method utilizes visualization, breathing and relaxation techniques to fend off the symptoms of a panic attack when they occur.

Another option that some sufferers choose to help control panic attack symptoms is to actually face the fears.  For some, gradually confronting the situations that cause panic can help eradicate them.  There is method to this treatment, and it should be undertaken under the care of a physician or therapist so as not to aggravate the problem.

Chronic panic attacks, known as Panic Disorder, are a serious medical condition that can drastically affect the quality of your life.  Panic Disorder is not necessarily a permanent condition and it can be treated successfully.  Knowing that there are treatments out there though should help you can beat those fears and control panic attack symptoms!

    Results

By using the options that work for you to help control your panic attacks, you are able to live a life that is free of suffering from constantly being consumed with fear of your next panic attack. You can also use what you know to help others that may be in the same position you were in before you found the proper help.

Of course, encouraging someone to see their doctor is the best way to go, but because many people are afraid to seek professional help or because they are ashamed of their condition, helping them to learn breathing exercises and the like that have worked for you is something that can offer them at least a small amount of relief.

Your doctor is your best choice always when you are having trouble. He can make a correct diagnosis and get you started in the right direction to end your anxiety attacks. I have used a book and audios that have really made a difference. You can find the link at the top of my website.

    Panic Attacks Treatment

    November 13, 2009 by admin

There are TWO main types of Benzo’s…there are FAST-ACTING ones that kick in quickly(15 minutes),these are the best for PANIC EPISODES,I’d recommend XANAX or ATIVAN.

Klonopin and Valium(others)are more of a “maintence” drug, they will help the panic stay away and help keep anxiety in check, they are good, but if you have a sudden attack of panic/anxiety then you would NEED a fast acting solution(again like Xanax/Ativan).

Here’s the problem, what you are up against basically…..Most Doctor’s do NOT like to prescribe them, they are HIGHLY abused on the street, and they are very addicting to some people.Your best bet is to NOT ASK FOR THEM unless you have to,in other words….wait and see what he/she offers YOU,then if it’s not one of the Benzo’s I mentioned above….THEN you could say “Well, hey I heard about ’such and such drug’ might be more helpful to me right now”,and see what he/she says then.

Worst case scenerio, you are going to have to go to a Phsyciatrist and get them. It’s really SAD,b/c the TRUTH is Benzo’s are EXTREMELY SAFE AND EFFECTIVE,it’s only b/c people go out and sell their own prescriptions on the street,or take way more than prescribed, ect, ect that it’s so hard to get them.Benzo’s are actually safer than any SSRI/SNRI.The only real danger is when you go to STOP them…they can cause brain seizures(b/c of the sudden drop of Gaba in your brain/your brain adjusting to not having enough Gaba, ect)
For this reason…they must be stopped SLOWLY,in other words you taper down the dosage over time, now this only applies(in most cases) to people who have taken them longer than like a month,or were on very high doses, ect.

You should only need a very small dose(like .25 Xanax) to stop a panic attack when you first get on them. Please be aware, they CAN be addictive, the main reason IMO is b/c for a person with HIGH anxiety/panic,they make you feel SO MUCH BETTER,that you don’t want to get off them, and with the faster acting ones(Xanax),they start to ware-off in about 4-6 hours, you’ll feel it…so then, you’ll want to take another one,b/c you can feel the “calmness” is gone,so you want it back(even though your not in panic)it begins a cycle of addiction/dependance on the drug itself.

Sooooo, just be very careful….remind yourself ONLY take them when you REALLY need them,if you do that, you will prevent yourself from becoming addicted:-)

Here are a few ideas on how to cope…
Once you’ve finally visited doctor and have been diagnosed with panic attacks you will be offered a course of treatment. In order to make sure the treatment has the best chance of succeeding, YOU need to take control of your life!

    1.  Participate in Your Treatment

Do not sit back and wait for relief to come by itself! You must remain active and aware of your mind and body’s reactions to treatment. Be ready and willing to ask any and every question and to address every concern you have with your health care provider. Open lines of communication will increase the chance of control and success.

    2.  Be Patient

While many patients respond within weeks or sometimes even days to treatments for panic attacks, no one responds the same. Furthermore, no known treatments for panic work instantly. Be prepared to spend at least a full two months following your initial course of treatment before you start judging its effectiveness. If you still haven’t experienced the improvement you were seeking, you can always work with your provider to adjust your treatment plan then.

    3.  Be Alert To Side Effects

If part of your treatment involves medication, you will likely need to be aware and provide a lot of feedback to the doctor until the dose and type of medicine is determined.  Make certain your doctor explains to you the side effects you might have to expect. Usually they get easier to tolerate with time but it’s critical that you know what to expect.  Your doctor may begin lowering your dosage, or trying alternatives if the side effects are pronounced or cannot be tolerated.

    4.  Join A Panic Disorder Support Group

If misery loves companionship, then a great source of support, relief and information for those who suffer from panic attacks can be found in the support group.  Now I’m NOT a big fan of support groups in that they tend to validate problems instead of focusing on fixing or living with them.  I do recognize however that some people find great solace and support in these groups and for those people, please attend and enjoy.  Most attendees will be talking about their experiences, their treatments and coping tips.

Just keeping these tips in mind and putting them to use during your treatment may help make you feel much better and increase your chances of treatment being effective.

Treatments Options For Getting Rid Of Precancer

    November 13, 2009 by admin

Severe dysplasia is not really a pre-cancer it is an abnormality in maturation of the cells and it can be found anywhere in the body. A true pre-cancer would be an in situ carcinoma these are cancers that are not yet invasive. If they are not treated they will become an invasive cancer. Severe dysplasia is what the cells look like before they are an in situ carcinoma. So I guess if you wanted to put it in layman’s terms it could be called a pre pre-cancer.

When this process involves the cervix it is a different matter than it is elsewhere in the body. These changes are often caused by HPV and the condition may remain this way for long periods of time. Less often they do progress on to cancer and they also spontaneously regress. The problem is we have no way of knowing what they will do so the patient has to be watched closely.

First of all, when it comes to cervical cancer, doctors use the term “carcinoma in situ,” “CIN 3,” and “severe dysplasia” interchangably.

Still, only about 25% of severe dysplasia will progress to cancer. That’s right. Even if you don’t have a cone biopsy, you chance of not getting cervical cancer is 75%. Still, a 25% risk of cancer is pretty high. You definitely want the cone biopsy.

Why are you even thinking about hysterectomy? You can have multiple cone biopsies before you will need a hysterectomy.

The cone biopsy is like 95% curative if they remove the entire lesion. It’s still about 80% curative EVEN IF THEY DON’T REMOVE ALL THE DYSPLASIA!!! Usually your immune system kicks in and takes care of the rest.

Make sure you with your doctor how much cervix she is going to remove. They can remove 1mm to 2 cm or even more. It’s your choice whether to be conservative or agresssive. You can remove just the worst areas, or ask her to make sure she gets it all. The risk of leaving some behind obviously raises your chance of recurrence but decreases that this will cause any pregnancy complications. Taking less cervix also means you can have more cone biopsies. Taking more raises your risk of preterm birth more (though the increased risk is slight) but increases the chance that the cone biopsy will cure you.

The odds are in your favor for this being the only treatment you ever need. Take this one step at a time. No need to even consider hysterectomy.

The other option in to look into a clincal trial. They are testing a theraputic vaccine that boosts your immune system and makes the pre-cancer regress. No removal of any of your cervix.

You should not need a hysterectomy and if your OB/GYN has said that is the next step you should get another opinion. Most patients with your condition regress with ablative therapy. You should also know fertility drops dramatically for a woman at 30.
